Sie ist das Wahrzeichen der Stadt und gilt neben der Dresdner Frauenkirche und dem Hamburger „Michel“ als einer der bedeutendsten evangelischen barocken Kirchenbauten Deutschlands. Die Ludwigskirche sowie der sie umgebende Ludwigsplatz wurden von Friedrich Joachim Stengel im Auftrag von Fürst Wilhelm Heinrich von Nassau-Saarbrücken als „Gesamtkunstwerk“ im Sinne einer barocken place royale entworfen. Der Bau begann im Jahr 1762. Nach dem Tod Wilhelm Heinrichs im Jahr 1768 wurden die Arbeiten wegen Geldmangels eingestellt. Erst 1775 wurde die Kirche durch seinen Sohn Ludwig fertiggestellt, nach dem sie auch benannt wurde. Vom 17.-22.
